Back in ancient days -
When I was working as a sportswriter/editor/photographer in the 80's and 90's, for newspaper/magazine work we were prohibited from using flash during any game in any sport even in fully lighted conditions (for example, basketball) as many players consistently complained the sudden light was a distraction.
This required us to use 1600 film and push it to 3200 during development in the darkroom. The resulting product was usable but not the best quality.
Use of any flash in any dark background is a considerable advantage and today's technology is far beyond anything available back then. The examples shown in the NMCA thread are remarkably good for low light night conditions.
With the majority of drivers in that thread saying the flash was no problem, perhaps drag racing drivers are an exception with better concentration or times have changed. It would be interesting to ask that question to a larger group of today's drivers in drag racing or players in other sports and see what the result would be.
