The teardrop "scoop" is designed to clear the hi risers and med risers and the opening is in the rear to relieve the air pressure......all inlet air is thru the headlight hoses into the air box.
Dan says that it would not look right without it...lol......fact..but none of the intakes or carb setups for the Fords will fit under a flat hood except the dual plane intakes. The "tunnel wedge" type intakes are all too tall. We also use a small spacer under the hood hinges to lift the rear of the hood, era correct style, to allow hot air out of the engine compartment.
