What do you guys think of Air Pans? Do they work?

Air pans to direct air into the carbs?...........properly fitted they will increase air flow in some applications. Be careful with some scoops and hoods......too much air will pull the scoop off or bow up the hood.......we usually put a few holes in the rear of the scoop to allow a bit to flow out. In some cases the larger scoops will only slow ya down in high gear.

I have one on the car now so when I get it to the track in April I will see how it works on my car. My scoop isn't air tight to the hood so it should let some air pass by. I guess that is why they call it test and tune. I have so much testing and tuning to do on the car. I hope I get it all done this year.

The number one way to slow down my 63 tempest is too remove air pan. It has a good seal too hood.

I've ran with air pans and without.
With an air pan, the car is ALWAYS faster (properly jetted), BUT.. they are not as consistent, with changes in ambient air temp.
I believe it's because the underhood air (although it's warmer), is a more consistent temp.
Malibu does not have an air pan, and it's the most consistent car I've ever owned, bar none. Hope we haven't messed it up with the changes made this winter!
My 2 pennies worth....... That's my opinion, and I'm stickin' to it!....(Unless I change my mind!).

I have heard it both way on an air pan so I thought I would give it a try. God knows I don't need the car to go any slower. After I added that intake to the front of the car I hope the airpan helps. I think that intake added 25-30lbs to the frontend.

Messured it today. I could only measure the front edge. It measured 4". Hood was on top of the car and I am short so couldn't reach the center.
No short jokes!

I'll assume it is 5" in the center and a "5" Scoop"
You're most likely Ok at 125 mph -- but too much faster and the theory is that the 5" is acts like too much of a sail and can slow you down. I have a 5" Hemi on the Red Coronet and a shorter 64 Style on the black car. I think I might have been a little faster on the red car with a 4" scoop.

I run a period correct reproduction hood/scoop 66/67 fairlane setup with a reproduction 2x4 air filter sealed setup. Trying to keep the nostalgia look from the era, as this is part of what the spectaters come to see.

Bob Mosher: Sorry if you don't like that I am thinking about using an airpan. My car represents the Nostalgia look and feel the same as most of the cars that run NSS. So unless your car is 100% period correct then don't throw stones in a glass house. You know what, come to think of it PISS OFF. I come to this site to get racing advice from some knowledgable NSS racers not to be judged by you.

Ummm....not to stick my nose where it don't belong, but Bob has been out there a long time and I am guessing he meant no harm with his statement- his car IS very clean and I would think twice about not taking his advice..... as they say nowadays .....just sayin
