After reading about Steve Wilson's tire failure, is there a life expectancy for front tires? The Moroso tires on my 64 are at least 10 years old.

Not sure. Some say, if they're not dry rotted, run 'em.
My tire guy says 5 years, regardless how good they look.
When I got the Malibu, it had 185 VW skinnies on it. I ran them for 2 years until my tire guy looked at them one day. He said he hadn't seen Michelins like that in ages. The DOT stamping revealed they were made in 1982 (this was 2008!)!
I had been driving 124 MPH on them! Changed them the next week, EVEN THOUGH, they looked brand new.
Sold 'em at a swap meet. New owner was advised of their age.....he was happy to have such a good looking set of tires at a bargin-basement price!
Guess each will have to decide.....

I always go with 5 years. 130 mph is not when you want a mistake. Glad Steve stayed off the walls.

I looked at those tires at the track and I would have to say they looked a little worn. Steve's a nice guy and I don't know how old they are, He said they weren't that old and the tread was in specs, so I don't know if it popped because of age, wear or locking up the brakes. I wouldn't keep mine over 5 years myself though, if they were older, I would be looking at least for a tube to put in them if that's even available.
I'm glad he came out okay, tire held together within itself so it didn't even appear to damage the car any.

Looks like I'm buying new tires. A friend of mine had a VW tire blow out in his duster at the stripe, took out the brake caliper and fender, he was able to get it stoped before he hit anything - he got very lucky.

I replace trailer tires in two years, slicks in three years, and front tires in four years -- regardless of wear.

When we were running 10 /12 major events a year we changed slicks twice a year and the fronts about every 4 or 5........
Keeping the slicks fresh was good for the difference in a 1.38/9 to a 1.34/36 60 ft...When it started going over 1.40...they were gone.

I change fronts every two seasons. Slicks only last 40-50 runs on our car.

I can get 2 full years on rear tires. Always have. The ones I take off are 60' the same as new ones. They even have a good hole. I have trouble selling them because they are too large to go under most bracket racer cars and not big enough for serious ones. Jim N.
